Easy Math Problem - Pascal's Triangle - What's the Missing Number?
What is the missing number in this triangle of numbers?
This formation is known as Pascal's triangle. Attributed to French Mamthetician Blasé Pascal.
Though this formation has been used previously by mathematicians in China, India and Persia as early as the 2nd century BC.
The numbers of each row is created from the sum of the numbers above it.
So in this case, 1+1 is 2 and in another case 1 + 2 is 3. You can already see the pattern forming.
For completeness, let's tackle this row by row!
The first row starts off with 1.
The second row is 1 1, both of which are created from the 1 in the first row.
The third row is 1 2 1. This is formed by bringing down 1 to make the first 1, adding 1 and 1 to make 2, and bringing down the second 1 to make 1 again.
The fourth row is 1 3 3 1 from bringing down the 1's, adding 1+2 and 2+1 to make the 3's.
Now onto the 5th row. At this point the pattern is pretty clear. Since the question mark is directly underneath both 3's the missing number is 3+3.
The answer is therefore 6!
To further solidify your knowledge, what is the 6th row?
If you answered 1 5 10 10 5 1, good job! You now know how to solve Pascal's Triangle!
