Mozart completed this symphony in 1782, with the premiere performance being given in March of 1783 at the Vienna Burgtheater. The work was commissioned by the Haffner family, a wealthy family of Salzburg, which is where the symphony sources its name. The work was originally a less involved serenade for the ennoblement ceremony of Sigmund Haffner. Due to the popularity of the work Mozart adapted the serenade into the symphony.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro con spirito
II. Andante
III. Menuetto
IV. Presto
