A strong earthquake occurred off the southern coast of Java Island in Indonesia, shaking the capital Jakarta and the third largest city, Bandung. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred in waters 102km south of Java Island, Indonesia, at approximately 11:29 local time last night (the 27th). The epicenter is 8.11 degrees south latitude, 107.27 degrees east longitude, and the depth of the earthquake is 68 km. The earthquake caused the ceiling of a mosque in Sukabumi to collapse, and the ceiling of a hospital in Tashikmalaya collapsed, forcing patients to evacuate urgently. In the capital Jakarta, high-rise buildings shook for about a minute, and West Java provincial capital Bandung and Jakarta's satellite cities were also affected by the earthquake, with houses and buildings shaking. Indonesian authorities have not yet reported any injuries and there is no possibility of a tsunami, but have warned to be cautious as there is a possibility of aftershocks. Indonesia is located in the Pacific Rim seismic belt, known as the 'Ring of Fire', so earthquakes occur frequently. In December 2004, a massive tsunami caused by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake killed a total of 220,000 people, including 170,000 Indonesians, and in November 2022, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Cianjur, West Java, killing over 600 people.
