Haydn completed this symphony in 1761 as part the “Day Trilogy” of symphonies (6, 7 and 8). This symphony bears the name “Le soir” or “The Evening”, which followed the symphony No. 6 (Morning Symphony) and symphony No. 7 (Noon symphony).

This work is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro molto
II. Andante
III. Menuetto & Trio
IV. La tempesta: Presto
