Garden Update: August 15, 2020

It is now late enough in the growing season that my squash vines are starting to decline from squash vine borer damage and powdery mildew. Nevertheless, I still have been able to get some squash this year. My experience growing squash has been unpredictable. One year I may get more squash than I need for myself and another year the squash plants die before they can even yield two fruits.

As of this week my popcorn is finally setting out pollen tassels and female silk, so it looks like I will actually get some corn this year.

The first evidence of bean flowers have also appeared on my beans this week. I'm hoping this means the plants are fully mature by the time the frost hits in October.

In the background of the video you may hear a rattling insect screech. This is the sound of annual cicadas (Neotibicen linnei and N. tibicen) buzzing. They normally get noisy by the middle of August in Ohio.
