Mental and physical Wellness are critical to EVERYBODY, but I think being involved in ANY pursuit that asks you to bare your introverted soul to the public PROBABLY puts us MORE susceptible to turning to negative ways to “cope.” As with MOST things, we suggest you think ahead and have some strategies in place to keep you from drugs, binge-eating, doom-scrolling, and from depression. Lining up healthy activities and foods help keep you in the right mindset to feel better no matter how your art is being received. Also, we’re heading into a new year, so it seemed like a great time to think of new ways to live better. That’s what we decided to focus on for this blogging challenge. So, stay tuned for advice on health and wellness from fellow D.I.Y. Rock Stars. Welcome to Blogmas 2021!

Part of our “Work Smart and Not Hard” series; Based on “Other Record Labels” podcast ( Check out Quick Tip: How to Keep Your Record Label Organized )

1. Templates (don’t be afraid to copy descriptions from one document to the other—just make necessary changes; use a storage place for all related items (we have all files related to each podcast episode in a file with its title on it)
2. Batching (we try to record at least 2 episodes at a time, so that we don’t have to set up lights, audio recorder, cameras each week)
3. Systems (car keys example) rules—when I record our videos, I immediately put the files in the folder with all related materials, so that when it’s time to edit, everything I need is in one place.)
4. Planning (have a plan for when you update website, post social media links, send out newsletter, etc; allowing lead time.)
5. Beware of social media time drains.

197 Are you motivated by the push or by the pull?

Does praise motivate you? Or does criticism make you do your best? Here’s how to take advantage of this energy.

“Pull” is when people are behind you, cheering you on. For most people , having folks like your work and what you do is a motivator to do more.

“Push” is when folks don’t support you, and may even communicate that they think either what you’re doing is a waste of time, or worse, that they think you suck at it. They have been folks whose entire careers have been built off of pushing past THAT negative energy.

Why is ANY of this important? It’s important, because if you need people’s adoration to keep you motivated, then you might want to keep a clip file of all the good things that folks have communicated about you, so that you can reference it to rev you up for your next project. That’s if you’re motivated by the pull.

And if you’re motivated by the push, we STILL suggest that you keep a folder of the bad reviews. Looking at those from time to time will lead you on into your next great work.

Either way, we suggest that you know yourself first, then what you want (vision), and then use what works—push or pull energy—to help it fuel your journey.

188. Why are there so many jerks in the music business?! Video Description

We’ve said this before, but it REALLY hit home when we started the blog, I realized that the blogging community was so open and supportive, sharing resources, advice, and sharing each other’s posts. This was such a surprise to me, because we’ve been in the music business circles for three decades and folks seem to NOT do any of that. In fact, you have to find out about opportunities in the streets and you have to be regarded by people you DON’T know as worthwhile before the people around you locally will pay you any attention. And when we go to SOME music stores, we get treated poorly. It just seems as if folks in the music business are more cynical, mean-spirited, and just NOT approachable and friendly. This prompted us to ask why are there so many jerks in the music business?!

Here are 5 reasons why there are so many jerks in the music business:
1. Being a creative means you’re actually a pretty sensitive person. This vulnerability might cause you to have the opposite demeanor; meaning that you might put up an armor, so that folks won’t hurt your feelings about your art.
2. "Qualifications" don't guarantee success (graduating from Berkeley College of Music doesn't mean you're going to be successful)
3. You're only as good as your last success. —And if you never had success, then you're really going to be insecure. (You MAY even be representing work that you don't like in order to make a living. A&R reps get fired all the time, even after they've had successes under their belts.)
4. If you're a "failed" artist turned music business exec you may have an extra chip on your shoulder (especially toward someone you deem to not be playing by the rules)
5. Scarcity mindset. When you feel like there are only X number of slots for YOUR brand of music and that someone else is occupying the space that you want.

5 Ways NOT to be a jerk:
1. Give feedback to people who are putting their music out there. Many times lack of feedback is crushing to folks who have worked so hard to share a part of their souls.
2. Whenever you have critiques, ALWAYS find something good to mention FIRST. Start with the good comment and then follow up with the suggestions to improve.
3. Share opportunities and resources that you find with your entire community.
4. Share other folks’ work on a regular basis.
5. Spread joy. Smile and greet folks when you’re out and about.

This made us think about some of the choices that were upon us and why we chose one option over the other and what impact that can have on a trip.

Hotel:
-Like to be close enough to the action, but far enough to have to walk out of it.
-If you want to see the action, you’re not THAT far, but you aren’t bothered by the constant hustle and bustle
-Helps is explore more of the area

Fitness:
-We like it when the hotel has amenities, but don’t look to that to cover our workout
-We spend much of our trips walking, so having opportunities to do that means that we aren’t reliant on what’s available at the hotel

Car vs. plane
—Used to think that we had to have a car (so we can get around), but since ride share has become widely available, that’s not an issue.
—Used to be more inclined to drive, but it’s so much nicer being here sooner getting home
—Having a car means that you have to keep track of the car, which in Chicago and New York means you pay just as much to park the car as for the room each night

This assumes that you are new to the idea of podcasting and it is a follow-up to our recent episode 173 Why should you have a podcast (for the D.I.Y. Rock Star)? (https://bit.ly/Ep173podcastvid).

Here are 6 Tips for Podcasting Better:
1. Decide on your topics (at least 3 areas, things you won’t get bored talking about, things that you are so curious about that you can’t get enough)
2. Invest in learning as much as you can to set your sound up adequately (a phone will likely do, but spend some time figuring out what will work for you)
3. Batch recording has been important (when you’re busy, it’s helpful to record a few episodes at a time, so that you can set up things once and get more done, group topics for series—which is a long-term content strategy)
4. Decide how long you want to make episodes (that’s personal and you will figure that out as you work through some early episodes)
5. Decide regularity (while it doesn’t HAVE to be weekly, make sure that you decide on SOME sort of schedule, so people who like you will know to look for you)
6. Consider re-purposing content (though this is not for EVERYONE, consider recording it as a video—along with the audio—and then going back and making blog posts out of your favorite topics; not all of the people you want to impact listen to traditional audio podcasts, and some only read blogs, so this way you maximize that same content to reach more people)
7. Be sure to add show notes--even if you decide NOT to write a separate blog post. It helps people connect with you on a deeper level--maybe even on your favorite social media platforms, blog, mailing list, etc. We’ve said it before, but people buy into who you are, so if they like you, they MAY want to know how else to connect and/or what else you are doing. That’s where these show notes come in. For instance, if you want to point them to your current single, this is the place to include those links.

This album, “Sugar Fit,” is their 25th release on their own label (under various pseudonyms), but only the 11th studio album for Bourgeoisie Paper Jam. The lyrics are more about embracing a mood than about making any one statement, so the subject matter ranges from being beguiled by a partner (“I Get Faded”) and seduced by the artistic process (“Honey”) and, even though folks think grownups have got it all together, the song “Sugar Fit” is about figuring how best to spend your time when you have to choose between working at making a living instead of working at your art. A Taxi reviewer said of the title track, “Sugar Fit,” “Love the hook rhythm guitar part and cool answer guitar!”

The music on this "Sugar Fit" album is decidedly funky. In fact, it is the album that harkens back to the funk of Sly Stone and Prince, along with a little Johnny Guitar Watson and Rick James—with just a pinch of Lenny Kravitz—thrown in for flavor. We know about the bills, the boss, and the kids, but think about the fact that creating something of value is your passion, so are you making the time and taking the effort to do those things? The reason why we feel qualified to discuss this topic is that there have been times in our lives where we have asked ourselves these same questions.

4 Questions to Ask Your Yourself to find out if you’re procrastinating (for the D.I.Y. Rock Star):
1. What are you making time for? No matter what is going on in your life, you should be doing what you want your legacy to be. And what brings your life joy. We can’t say it enough, but PLANNING is a key component to making things happen—ESPECIALLY if you’re busy. We know that sounds counter-intuitive, but it’s true. Talk is cheap, but action speaks.
2. Are you a worthy participant of what you want to do? If you never produce a painting, are you a painter? Start producing the work that you want to see in the world.
3. Are you a part of your own solution? While we realize this is a bigger discussion, but be a part of solving your own problems, instead of constantly trying to solve others or complain about what you can’t do (or about what “they” won’t “let” you do.)
4. Are you constantly making excuses? What could be more important than your art? You can start anywhere, so get started. We have said that you can get started producing almost ANY art by using your cell phone and you can put it out into the world with your cell phone. Eight year olds have smart phones now, so what’s your excuse?

Maybe I see our mission—if we have one—as helping you all—and ourselves—stay tuned into who you truly are. We think knowing who you are is your Super Power and will help you lead a life of purpose and passion. Needless to say, my ears perk up every time there is a discussion of finding one’s creative self. Consider this augmented eavesdropping, since it was inspired—once again—by one of my new favorite podcasts, Creative Pep Talk (episode 312; Do You Know Who You Are? Find Your Creative Identity Now; http://bit.ly/creativepeppod312 ). We believe that not only is this helpful to new artists, but to us seasoned folks as well, because, as far as we are concerned, you will need to keep yourself in “calibration,” so that you can know what your goals are and what you are willing—and unwilling—to do to get where you want to be.

4 Ways to Find Your Creative Identity (for the D.I.Y. Rock Star):
1. Early on, you rent your identity (steal someone’s style; see episode 164 http://bit.ly/Ep164copyvid ) Find what SEEMS like is good to you and then go toward the direction that feels like it’s closer to what feels more like you. That may be something you’ve never seen. That is what will make you you… keep trying things on in the meantime.)
2. Associate yourself with what you love (if you want to move in that direction and get more opportunities) Pizza says write 3 “I am” statements to try to figure you out. (i.e., “I am a musical artist”; “I am aware that I am black, but I do not dwell on it”; and “I am constantly searching for new ways to express my artistic vision.”) Pizza says that by identifying what you associate with, you draw those people and experiences in and, naturally, repel those who don’t want to relate on these levels.
3. Own the contradictions (you are the overlapping of a variety of ideas) Contradictions lure us in. It will bring people to you. “I am a Mormon pothead” was his example of someone that we will listen more closely to. What’s weird is that you will give other people who are oddly configured too permission to express themselves.
4. Make sure you respect the identity you are trying on (our rap projects are an example). If you are trying to fit an identity in order to gain popularity or money, you will not be happy, because you will feel like what you’re making is not even good music. Even when you’re “trying on” identities, you want it to feel good; at least for a while anyway.
