The cleansing fire of Purgatory is certain says St. Robert Bellarmine. That this fire is corporeal, literal physical fire, is highly probable... Let us continue to help the poor souls detained in those painful flames all the while avoiding being plunged into them ourselves. St. Teresa of Jesus says, “in the company of saints we become saints.” This life is all about practicing for heaven where we hope to live in the company of saints forever. This life is all about claiming a place in heaven by how we respond to the graces sends us by God. It is passing the test… the entrance exam to heaven. This life is all about becoming a saint and that takes practice. Thus St. Philip Neri often said, “the great thing is to become a saint.” But how?? We keep company with the saints… those in heaven and those striving for the same here on earth.

How easy it is to become impatient in waiting for our Divine King to fulfill His Promises. How easy it is to start wondering where He has gone in times like these. The great Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky describes in an insightful allegory (called the Grand Inquisitor) how a Cardinal decided to act on this impatience and form his own kingdom while remaining in his position inside the Church, the Kingdom of Christ on earth. The Cardinal justifies himself on why he founded a new kingdom, how he did it (that is, who helped him), and some of the effects. This allegory seems to have a haunting echo or fulfillment in our times. Let us, then, be patient in waiting for the fulfillment of His Majesty’s promises lest we become a Grand Inquisitor ourselves or help some new Grand Inquisitor in our midst today. Let us pray and hope that the King of kings will visit any such Inquisitors that are alive today with a powerful actual grace to convert them back to the ways of His Divine Majesty. Liberal ideologues have already co-opted the so called, “Me Too” movement demanding an end to patriarchal structures in society. The headship of men over families must be overthrown. Maleness must be expunged from men. Masculinity is toxic and must be eliminated from boyhood onwards. The same thing is also happening within the membership of the Church as people call for revolutionary changes in regard to Church governance and the apostolic discipline of clerical celibacy. Let us not fall prey to these revolutionary errors that would overthrow the proper order as established by Christ. And let us begin by building up the priesthood. Let us acknowledge its angelic beauty and its infinite wonder. Perhaps if we begin to appreciate more and more the priesthood, there will be better candidates…better seminarians who embrace this call of being an angel on earth. And maybe one of those future priests could be some young man in the pews today. If you want to reform the priesthood, then maybe it can begin by the parents in the congregation giving the Church one of your sons. Forty years in 1978, the English convert Malcolm Muggeridge gave two memorable speeches at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. At one point he recalled how the Communist tyrant Stalin, in a moment of desperation during the height of WWII, restored the imprisoned Russian Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow to his previous position and dignity. Stalin wanted the churches to open once again. The spiritless and bankrupt ideology of Karl Marx and Lenin was not sufficient to motivate the people to fight anew. Something more was needed. Muggeridge then made what seems to be a prophetic statement, saying: “This easily might happen again. The people emerging as Christians in the USSR may become so strong that the Soviet government will adopt Christianity. There is a strain of irony in our human affairs. [William] Blake’s phrase for it is ‘fearful symmetry’. What a wonderful example of fearful symmetry it would be if on the selfsame day that Marxism is thrown out the Kremlin window, the Vatican is impelled by the pressure of Christian-Marxist dialogues with Jesuits and others to issue an encyclical… de necessitate Marxisme! Stranger things have happened” notes Muggeridge. Hmmm. Is not Russia open to Christianity? And from some reports, if they can be believed, they are even open to message of Fatima and consecration. Meanwhile we are pursuing what could be classified as a form of Marxism with a Jesuit Pope! Muggeridge continues: “This irony is written into our mortal existence. It is conveyed beautifully in medieval cathedrals where you have a steeple climbing up into the sky, symbolizing all the wonderful spiritual aspirations of human beings. But at the same time in the same roof you have these little grinning gargoyles staring down at the earth. The juxtaposition of these two things might seem strange at first… but I contend they are aspects of the same attitude of mind… an awareness that at the heart of our human existence is this mystery, interwoven with our affairs: this ..

With the true Church once again going through a crisis and being discredited over all the world, we must not give way to the temptation to hand over to Caesar what is God’s. Listen to the great Russian novelist Dostoevsky touch on this way back in the late 19th Century by recounting a French high security official, saying: “We are not afraid of all these socialists, anarchists, atheists, and revolutionaries. We keep an eye on them, and their movements are known to us. But there are some special people among them, although not many: these are believers in God and Christians, and at the same time socialists. They are the ones we are most afraid of; they are terrible people! A socialist Christian is more dangerous than a socialist atheist.” Let us avoid this by always rendering to Caesar the things that are Caesars and to God the things that are God’s.
