IF WE STOP THE HATE, THE REST WILL VANISH

LONDON: THE CITY OF ACTIVE DENIAL

I got into Paddington at around half four on Friday 9th of July, the journey from Bath was not an issue without a mask, the only security “officer” who twitched to challenging me got shown my asthma inhaler before he twitched the second time and just as fast went back into his mental little box, watching the herd.

the hotel I had booked already had someone in the room as an over stay and I had to march around for a while looking for a hotel, no stranger to many cities the task didn’t daunt me at all.

as I walked over neigh on, and at times empty roads, the nearly empty pavements was a bit of a shock to the system for me, moving at a steady pace was enjoyable, the silence at times I didn’t notice at first, when it hit me I smiled, the city being quiet enough and empty enough to take time to enjoy the architecture and think instead of moving like an animal was nice.

London before the lockdown, the noise and chaos and constant danger from everything from the traffic to the pollution, from the station’s street robberies to the gangs of beggars, all brought down to manageable levels.

I imagine that is what our politicians want London to look like all the time, subjugated and under control.

London’s hotels are full, but I finally got one, 45 quid for Friday night, but only the one night, not a problem thinks I, the shower and the ache of my feet winning the argument, I accepted.

as I get out of the shower, I opened the window and was again shocked by the quietness, one plane in the sky miles away and a police drone a few streets away and that was it, even the restaurant opposite was quiet, full but quiet, people talking in lower than usual voices for a Friday night in Victoria.

taking a walk to have a smoke and find some food only the residential streets have life, little restaurants from across the globe all trying to follow the regulations, one stop shops and the proverbial Sainsburys, all of these supermarkets still employing the same people they have employed throughout this pandemic, the familiarity in their conversations and mannerisms a dead giveaway, to pardon the pun.

it reminds me of the indestructability of shop workers across the board in our country, these people have mixed with everyone in their neighbourhood yet the numbers of healthy shop workers who have died of covid is negligible if counted at all.

this universal invincibility in Morrisons workers, Sainsburys workers one stop shop’s etc is amazing, statistically speaking these people should have the highest number of deaths.

firstly, because there is a very high probability of contact with people who have the virus personally or through touching things on the shelves other people have touched and secondly because just as with our food shops in Bath, there are a high number of elderly workers with underlying health conditions there too, both of these combined should rate the highest employment deaths of covid 19 alone.

this has not happened in the slightest, the people I knew in our local supermarkets are all still alive and kicking, even those with underlying health conditions, and let’s be honest, we are all guilty of contact at one time or another, if we are all carriers.

18 months of no mass deaths of healthy people as one expects in a pandemic, just the same numbers of normal flu deaths rebranded as covid irrespective of cause of death.

with the traffic still light and people walking at a peaceful pace it made it seem more like the villages these districts were supposed to be, the one thing it is not is it is not the crime ridden streets the media portrait at all.

wandering back to my hotel what struck me was the lack of clubbers, hookers, fighting drunkards, homeless people and screaming squad cars, everything I used to see around there just reduced to lower levels than Bath.
