The looting, arson, and assaults by criminals and communists continues in Chile. I believe it will do so for the foreseeable future. The government is weak and is backing down to the Left, and is even willing to back a making a new constitution. The President thinks he can negotiate with communists. It is ridiculous. All the while they continue to spread mayhem.

Yesterday than made incursions into the upper class section of Viña del Mar. They threatened to come further in, to Reñaca and Concón sur. A reason for optimism emerged when a group of 325 people gathered (mostly with fluorescent vests) spontaneously at Reñaca beach to withstand the evildoers. The Carabineros were there to help, too, although few in numbers. They did manage to break up the 7,000-people march that had started in Valparaíso before it reached Calle 15 Norte in Viña del Mar.

The bad news is that we will likely need to go back down to defend Reñaca and Concón sur every day that they have marches, which could be often.

The at least 1,100 businesses looted or destroyed is covered, hoteles, skyscrapers, plus the 40,000 micro businesses negatively affected. Details of losses to Cencosud, Wal-Mart, Unimarc, Sodimar chains are noted, not to mention high schools and government buildings. 4,316 arrests, 1,574 injured, 157 eye injuries, 179 arraignments. Massive grafitti and broken windows.

October 22, 2019. This video is about helping you decide whether or not to stay in Chile or get out. Details are given about Chilean history and politics and the real possibilities for change here. Note that we exceeded the 2 hour time limit set by YT and so a good chunk of the introductory comments were cut off.

I have never once before now (in nearly 24 years of Chilean residence) suggested that it might be time to leave Chile or that the USA is actually a better place to be right now than Chile. I could not have said so even a week ago. However, what has happened over the last few days (and so quickly) changes things. Exit options need to be considered. Plan B passports need to be dusted off. Other countries need to be looked at.

Nevertheless, there are still some historical and other reasons to be optimistic and stay in Chile. Any country can be attacked and needs to defend itself. There is evidence that such has happened in Chile with undercover Venezuelans and communists from the Sao Paulo Forum. That scenario, if true, does not mean you should stick around while the problem gets fixed but it does mean that you might consider leaving for a long vacation and then coming back after the evildoers are gone. Lots of options to look at.

There is no guarantee of lasting freedom anywhere and thus no reason to regret having come to Chile. Things change. I have stated for years that it could change in Chile, too. Perhaps things will blow over in a week and we can all get back to normal. Perhaps not. Either way it is good to talk options about self-defense in country, expectations, and exit alternatives.
