We took a quick trip to Frankenmuth for a corn maze before Halloween, they also had some other festivities going on and live music. Great way to enjoy a fall day. We got our pumpkins for painting from our favorite little market by us LJ's Farm. Lastly it was a snowy Halloween night here in Michigan.

I have been doing an asmr video once a month and thought it might be fun to do a hive inspections as one. It's also an easy way for me to jump into the hive quickly and get the checks I need to do done. This was the very first time I used my smoker and I clearly had no idea what I was doing when it comes to the smoker. I used way to much of it partly because I knew the sound would be good and because I didn't really know how you use the smoke. Hope you guys find the humming of the bees as peaceful as I do.

Since I'm planting everything out this week, I thought I would give you a short tour of the Greenhouse before it's all gone. We started a lot of seeds in the greenhouse this year and we even overwintered and had some very early greens. This was our first winter and spring really putting the greenhouse to work and so far, I think it did really well for us.

I have read a lot of stuff about planting fruit trees and boy do people like to make it harder than it has to be. There seems to be debate about what shape hole, what to add to it and honestly I think it's all over kill. Nature has the best plan and it seem to work way more than not work, so that's what we follow here.

Having so much garlic planted around our yard we needed to find a way to use some of the space behind the plants to help produce food for ourselves. After doing some research on good companion plants for garlic we set about filling in some holes to help maximize our harvest later in the year.
Some good companion plants for garlic inculde: eggplant, tomato, peppers, kale, spinach, carrots, beets, dill, kolrabi
I didn't see much about beans and garlic but I want to plant a few to see if they can grow and help add nitrogen back into the soil

Last year when I started to work on creating an urban garlic farm, I heard an often asked question can you grow store bought garlic. The thing I heard most often was that you can only grow organic garlic because non-organic garlic is treated to not grow. Well I decided to put it tobthe test to see what was true. Did the late cold snap hurt us? If your from the south you also know this as blackberry winter, a cold snap that happens in mid May. Today we got an awesome package, tons of fruit bushes and trees for growing more unusual fruit trees for our urban food forest. We are adding a few new out of the norm trees to our growing food forest and we got these from Raintree nursery out in Washington state. Now they did send these to us as a promo, but I have already used them for other stuff we have grown so I have personal experience spending my hard earned money there and have been very happy with them. I want to thank Raintree Nursery for sending us these amazing trees and really allowing our family to get a step closer to growing even more of our own food right here on our urban lot.

I felt like we have all been in a rut lately with the stay home order, so we packed in the car and drove out to the country! It was a good day to take care of our mental health and do something different, see something different, enjoy nature and chase some chickens. How is your guys mental health holding up? I have been trying to stay very busy to keep my mind focused and keep pushing to get our family into a better position in life. With the extra time we have had recently it has really changed garden planning. This was not a project I intended to do this year, however after looking at some of my materials on hand I thought this was something I could tackle. Our pallet raised beds have been getting really bad and I have been wanting to pull them out. This seemed like a perfect place for the beginning of an herb spiral of sorts since we already grew a lot of herbs in the pallets.

The ballad of an old peach tree, it is a sad day to have to pull this tree out but sometimes it's what needs to be done. My wife and I bought and planted this tree the summer we bought the house 10 years ago now. It gave us fruit and taught us about caring for fruit trees and it also was the beginning of transforming our yard into what it is today.
