William B. Grant, Ph.D. was an author of this study and is Founding Director, Sunlight, Nutrition and Health Research Center, an entity devoted to research, education, and advocacy relating to the prevention of chronic disease through changes in diet and lifestyle.
His primary mission is to identify and quantify risk-modifying factors for chronic diseases. He is particularly interested in UVB and cancer and infectious diseases, but has also studied the role of dietary factors in disease risk.
He is motivated by being able to use his scientific abilities to make important findings regarding human health and seeing his results used by others in their research programs or policy decisions. He is also motivated by the desire to help people realize that being healthy is up to them.

Estonian Real Podcast #015 Vitmin D and Cancer with Leena Hilakivi Clarke
My todays guest is Leena Hilakivi-Clarke. She is a professor of food science and nutrition at the Hormel Institute. In the podcast we talked about what cancer is and how it develops. We also talked about the conditions that can lead to cancer and what happens when a person is affected by cancer. We also talked about how vitamin d is one of the possible and safe cancer drugs and the current results are promising. Apart from vitamin d, we also talked about the effects of food on our bodies.
Dr. Leena Hilakivi-Clarke’s research involves studying the role of dietary factors in affecting breast cancer risk and mortality. She investigates how maternal diet and obesity during pregnancy can pre-program offspring’s risk of developing breast cancer, focusing on persistent changes in the offspring’s epigenome, gut microbiota and inflammatory pathways. She also studies possible interventions that could be implemented either during pregnancy or to adult offspring to prevent their increased breast cancer risk and risk of breast cancer recurrence. These interventions include bioactive compounds in foods, such as genistein and vitamin D, beneficial dietary fats, or traditional anti-inflammatory herb mixtures. Another research topic Dr. Hilakivi-Clarke has been studying is the biological changes caused by social isolation and loneliness that could explain why socially isolated individuals are at a significantly increased risk of dying of breast cancer. Along with smoking and obesity, social isolation is linked to adverse health outcomes. Dr. Hilakivi-Clarke collaborates closely with experts in computational modeling and has several past collaborations with epidemiologists to translate her preclinical findings to the clinic.

He received my Ph.D. in chemistry from Georgia Tech in 1978. He has 25 years of experience with proteases and protease inhibitors and worked 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry developing protease inhibitors for tissue destroying diseases: cancer, emphysema, arthritis, parasitic diseases.
He began his professional career at Abbott Laboratories in 1978, where he helped establish the chemistry group in the Diagnostics Division. He left Abbott in 1980 to become one of the founders of Enzyme Systems Products and Prototek. In 1993 he was a senior scientist for Khepri Pharmaceuticals, which Arris Pharmaceuticals acquired. He left Arris in 1996 and went across the Bay, where he worked closely with Professor Peter Duesberg at the University of California at Berkeley for ten years on the aneuploidy (or chromosomal imbalance) theory of cancer. Scarato has co-authored several articles on electromagnetic field policy and is a lead policy analyst and researcher for the EHT database on international actions– the most comprehensive collection of information on policy actions on cell phones and wireless.
