Ford Ranchero Project Car
That Which Shall Not Be Named...
Or, the 1974 Ford Ranchero that is so full of rust holes its like a tetanus filled piece of cheese.
Still, I like scraping my knuckles and learning knew curse words. So follow me, and maybe some of you might learn a trick, others might laugh as I bargain with physics, and all of you will hopefully enjoy the show!

Jacking up the Ranchero, to do some repairs. We’ll be prepping it using the angle grinder, wire brush and removing as much rust and crappy paint as we can. Rust holes leaking water inside, and finding where the water is coming from!
We attempt to use caulk as a means to cover up rust holes in the bed pan. Will it work? We make an attempt at covering up like bondo but with caulk.
Will it work? Find out!

Day two of the rust repair on the Ranchero. We’re sanding down the caulk using our trusty drill. Repairs sometimes include experimenting and attempts, like using the caulk, and sanding.
But once that’s all done, its time for paint! We use Rust Reformer and try to use Flex Seal (which has some problems out the gate). Don’t forget to cover all exposed metal to prevent rust. Ive said it before but Rust Reformed required minimal prep work, and actually binds with the rust itself. And to top it off, it dries nice and neat without drips.
We cut wires, so we don’t mix them up. Some of the tips make it really easy when it comes time to solder and reconnect them.
But more rust is on the horizon…and problems arise. Is this the end of the Ranchero?

Welcome everyone! If you read the last one, then welcome to the DAC Gang!
I remove the last piece of patch work and scrap metal. Frustrating, but along the way I figured to do a review of something basic.
Masonry crayon, soap stone and a paint marker! Which marks better, on painted metal, rusted metal?
So, join me under the car, as I figure out how to cut the floors out, WITHOUT losing structural integrity, and not cutting fuel lines, brake lines or dropping the fuel tank! A psychedelic trip underneat a 70s pickup car identity crisis of a car thing!
Towards the end, I go into the proper order in which to jack up a car with all four wheels off the ground! This is really important stuff, that will keep you…not crushed!

What do you do when somebody breaks the first commandment of the car hobby? What do you do if they dis your car?
This episode is important to me, as I have always wanted car shows to bring in younger generations, without them feeling bullied, insulted or humiliated over what kind of car they like and have, and its condition.
We all start from somewhere and not all cars are number 1 trailer queens.
Never put down somebody’s car, at car shows, online, anywhere. You can talk about issues, and offer constructive criticism, but one persons junk is another’s treasure.
Ultimately, the car hobby is in trouble, especially the more rare oddball vehicles. If we can’t stick together, then how what do we expect from the general public.
We sweat, we love, we fix, we show and race out cars.
Here on this channel, all cars are welcome! It doesn’t matter. You love it, then its cool.
Let’s get dirty, rusty and oily!
Today we rise up. Today we are strong. Today we are DAC GANG!
We are also very fortunate to get some backing, but a new start-up company. Thank you Directly25 LLC, the new owners of the DAC Dynasty IP!

MVP Tool of the episode:

What better time to review tools that burn that during a blizzard? So, I got the cheapest propane heater, the Duraheat TT-15S. It mounts directly to a standard 20lbs propane tank (like the one most of you have for the barbeque).
The more important tool, is the Bernz-O-Matic TS8000 propylene torch, with push button ignition and variable flow. Its cast aluminum with brass tubing, and is made in the US (surprisingly). This torch spreads out the heat in such a way as to heat up a larger section as opposed to the pencil flame torch that you saw me use with propane a few episodes ago.
So, I set out on fabricating a patch, and while it’s fairly simple, one corner is rather complex in shape, which requires heating. 1mm and thicker cannot be easily bent cold, so the torch does great, as it saves time, heating things up much faster. Sure it’s not acetylene and oxygen, but it’s the next best thing (unless you got some old MAP gas lying around lol)

A new format, new camera, while I tackle some rust holes, by patching them in and welding! My back hurts but I push on with the Ranchero repairs
Sand blasting the area with rust damage comes first, then cut out the rust, and fabricate the patches. Plan ahead so its easier to cut and weld. Sheet metal on older cars can be thick, as well as thinned out from corrosion.
I will be doing a lap weld, since I cannot get in there properly, not even with clamps or magnets. I do want to protect the areas under the lap weld, so that means sanding away all the rust and even using aircraft remover, all for getting ready for primer. Acetone is ideal for the final wipe down before primer.
I do end up blowing some holes while sand blasting, so another patch needs to be welded in. The welding was difficult for me. Im no welder, but I am willing to learn and put myself out there for criticism. I blow the garage fuse, get frustrated, my arc won’t strike, I cant see through the welding helmet, I blow through the sheet metal, and I even set my car on fire!
But I prevailed. Its not the prettiest weld, but it holds, and will be good enough for now. I do use seam sealer to cover up any gaps in the weld to prevent water and moisture from getting inside the car. It is not pretty, but if it works, I will be happy.
At the end, I wanted to show you guys what I am like most of the time. I am hurt, and as broken as the Ranchero but I WILL NOT give up on myself or this car. Yes, I get a bit into some random thoughts that came to me while pushing through this repair. You don’t have to watch, although if you do, thank you. My soul goes into these cars, and even in these videos. I even talk about world peace, and the kinship we share.

Im see the light, as the project 1974 Ford Ranchero moves ahead in its revival. I weld in the big holes in the bed. Bed corners are notorious for rusting and rotting out, even worse on Ranchero’s as the bed aligns above the cabin spare time compartment, letting water drain in, and messing up your floor pans.
I had to judge a lot of VA appointments this episode but I actually feel pretty good about how I welded in the two corners, and made a sturdy weld. This is a car revival and a me revival as well.
My mom, henceforth known as Shop Mom helped a lot, and picthed in for the Miller Digital Infinity auto darkening weld helmet. I do talk a bit about out of the box settings, nothing fancy, just what I had to find out before laying down some beads and tacks. It made a HUGE difference.
Also, I want to say, this video took a week to edit, doing 18 hours daily…plus, I put a lot of work into synching the music to the beats of the hammer, weld arcs and overall give it groove!
Thank you all for sticking around!
