The Magnum Opus that wasn't....

Released in 1997, Star Trek Starfleet Academy was intended to be the ultimate version of the console game released on SNES and 32X in 1994 and 1995 respectively. Unfortunately, either due to outdated graphics or the stigma of a "Wing Commander Clone," it underperfomed in sales as opposed to what Interplay and Viacom thought it would make. Combine that with the performance of the Generations PC game, it would start the infamous "All Star Trek games are bad" stigma that continues to this very day.

This game is not one of those.

Yep, this was a DOS game.

The PC version was planned for release a year before in 1996, as reflected by the graphics and FMV quality (also a smaller budget compared to Wing Commander III). The idea being to release a year after the 32X version. However, that wasn't the case.
As for gameplay, it's a pretty good flight sim, and managing a starship becomes as easy an affair as the console versions (your definition of easy may vary, please consult a licensed starfleet physician for more info).

Easy tutorial mission here, though my belief when first playing this game was the overall campaign difficulty being decided by what ship you selected. Later found out this wasn't the case, so oh well. Still, its funny to kick the enemy's ass with the starfleet equivalent of a frisbee attactched to a pontoon.

I'll admit, the Organians' Intervention in the whole Fed-Kling affair wasn't really neccessary, as both sides would've resolved in a peaceful manner after a long bloody stalemate.

2 Glitches Here: If you restart the mission inside the nebula, the start of the mission keeps the nebula effect (minus the static). Also, I believe in the beta system the transponders and the butterfly brick are the wrong color (?)
Slightly better acting with this Ventrusi this round. He talks tough, but beat up the base enough and he caves.

In case you got past the expletives, this mission is cursed. being forced to fight Venturi Al-Quaida gives me horrid flashback of the Vengeance episode from Star Trek 25th Anniversary. But that's not why it's cursed. The cursed part was the first time I completed this mission and recorded it, the audio didn't come with it. Same with the cutscene that comes after it. And it corrupted the save file.

Again, once more with feeling, fuck this mission.

Btw, $punish is the cheat for enhanced photon torpedoes (trust me, you'll need it).

Reason: Same thing with Mission 7 where the audio didn't come through the recording, only the save with the cutscene got corrupted. This being done for completionist's sake, nothing more.
