When Olof Palme was assassinated, one of messages left at the murder scene by a grieving Swede asked: "Who killed our dove of peace". His murder was one of the most traumatic events in this normally quiet country's history. A poll of Swedish newspaper editors nominated it as the "event of the century". Endless amounts of ink have been spilled about the murder. In a country famous for its thriller writers, this is a real-life murder more dramatic than them all - and it remains unsolved.
This documentary looks at the most politically sensitive, the most appalling, possibility: that Palme was killed by one of Sweden's allies, the revelation of which, if true, would have incalculable effects on that country's reputation even today, 30 years after the Cold War. Palme was a peace-maker and a humanitarian who threatened many established forces in the Cold war.
The film is still relevant. We are in 2020 and the world situation is as dangerous as it has ever been. Journalists have been talking about Cold War and even Hot War - nuclear war - with Russia, an event that would end life on this planet. But we have actually been here before, the early 1980s, when Reagan was belligerent in his rhetoric and the Soviets were the feared evil empire. Archives have since revealed we were a hair's trigger away from nuclear war, and that there were several false alarms. In this fevered atmosphere, with peace marches and school prayers for peace, a period everyone in Europe over 45 will remember, one man sought to build bridges between East and West, namely Swedish prime minister Olof Palme.
Desperately, Olof Palme tried to bring the Soviets into dialogue with the West, and then strange things started to happen in the normally quiet waters of this peaceful, neutral country. And then, before he could complete his mission, Olof Palme was assassinated. The assassination is still unsolved. Who did it, and why? And what does it say about the credibility of the West in its catalogue of accusations about Russian assassinations and other misdeeds as the Skripal case today? This book is actually absolutely essential reading for understanding the new cold war.
