Surveillance Blimp Equipment Sees for Miles and Miles
NEWS DESK | Israel is always looking to be a step ahead of its enemies. With equipment like the SkyStar balloons, it's goal can be achieved more easily — especially during the Northern Shield operation, and even for the Pope and Madonna. Daniel Tsemach has the story.
Story:
From the Rio Olympics to the Israel-Lebanon border — the new baby of RT LTA systems is code named ‘Skystar 120’.
It’s a micro-mobile surveillance balloon mobile capable of seeing objects from over three miles away, like a license plate number.
‘The balloon is already ready and fixed on the system. It advances according to instructions, and thanks to this car, it’s capable of moving in any terrain. You can change positions at any time, even when the balloon is in the air,’ RT LTA CEO Rami Shmueli explains.
And they also have bigger balloons.
‘This big balloon has a 100-pound camera. Now, that camera can see someone from over nine miles away in day or night,’ Shmueli says.
What makes these simple looking gadgets so effective is not only how easy they are to use, but also how cheap they are.
‘The cost for one day of operation is like $10 a day, or 50 cents per hour, compared to a drone, which would be something like $600 an hour, or a helicopter — $1800 an hour,’ Shmueli claims.
For that very reason, RT LTA systems has customers worldwide in the military and civilian sectors.
It may have even been used to film the Pope’s visit to Colombia. But for now, here in Israel, you can see the Skystar 120 surveillance along the Israel-Lebanon border, watching over IDF activity, and perhaps Hezbollah too, during operation Northern Shield.
