Schubert completed this symphony in 1816 at the age of 19. The work did not receive a public premiere until November 1849, after the death of Schubert. It was Schubert that added the name ‘Tragic’ to the manuscript of the symphony, however it is unclear why.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Adagio molto
II. Andante
III. Menuetto Allegro vivace
IV. Allegro
