A 2000 Biography, History Documentary written and presented by Dr. David Starkey.
Eminent historian Dr. David Starkey chronicles the extraordinary story of England's greatest Queen, Elizabeth I, in this four-part documentary. She emerged as a young princess against a backdrop of civil unrest, political intrigue, executions and coups. She ruled for 45 years and presided over a new kind of state. Her reign saw England emerge from the threat of European annexation to burst forth in a unique flowering of culture and became the world’s leading sea power. Packed with dramatic re-constructions, beautiful costumes and historic locations we follow the remarkable life story of a woman who reigned for over 40 tumultuous years.
Episode 1: The first part focuses on Elizabeth’s early life. She received a first-rate academic education, excelling in languages and rhetoric and exhibiting a strong interest in the Protestant religion her father had established in England. After the death of Henry VIII and Edward VI (Elizabeth's half-brother), Elizabeth's status as sister and would-be successor to the Catholic queen Mary I put her in a dangerous position. She was sexually abused by Thomas Seymour and later imprisoned at Mary's command, and perilously close to execution - after plots to place Elizabeth on the throne were revealed.
