Song Background – By Trevor Loucks
https://92keys.com/videos/falling-slowly/
What a great song this is. It has an interesting history starting from when it was first written for the indie film “Once” in 2006. It took several years for Falling Slowly to be noticed but would ultimately win an Academy Award for best original song for a motion picture in 2008. Well deserved! If you’ve never seen the original performance of Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová at Walton’s Music Shop in Dublin, you should. YouTube.
Irglová’s acceptance speech at the Oscars was almost skipped over, she was ushered off stage before she could say anything, but nice guy Jon Stewart brought her back out after the next commercial. Her speech was great:
“Hi, everyone. I just want to thank you so much. This is such a big deal, not only for us but for all other independent musicians and artists that spend most of their time struggling, and this, the fact that we’re standing here tonight, the fact that we’re able to hold this, it’s just to prove no matter how far out your dreams are, it’s possible. And, you know, fair play to those who dare to dream and don’t give up. And this song was written from a perspective of hope, and hope at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are. And so thank you so much, who helped us along the way. Thank you.”
The part about hope is especially true. If you’re a fan of the instrumental music world you’ve probably heard about Annie Schmidt, Jon Schmidt’s daughter. Jon is the pianist for The Piano Guys. Annie went missing over in Oregon about two weeks prior to this Falling Slowly video being uploaded. We have followed closely the very sad turn of events after the intense search in Oregon turned up nothing. And now the Schmidt family is left to deal with very intense grief and sadness.
But there’s also hope.
One of the first songs we did as a group with 92 Keys dealt with the tragedy of losing a child, Jordan’s Song (https://92keys.com/videos/jordans-song/). That song and video was created with the same idea of hope that someday the Zappia and Maxwell family would see Jordan again. I know the Schmidt family has the same faith and hope of seeing Annie again.
We can’t wait.
