Today, humans are seen merely as temporary and incidental products of an indifferent and aimless nature, more like uninvolved observers or even accidental intruders in her realm. We hold no special status in any grand cosmic purpose; our ideals, hopes, and spiritual ecstasies are simply the outcomes of our vivid but misguided imaginations, with no real bearing on a world that operates mechanically through space, time, and indifferent atomic forces. Our planet Earth is just a tiny dot in the vast expanse of space, and our existence here is both insignificant and fragile. Ultimately, we are at the mercy of indifferent natural forces that randomly brought us into existence and could extinguish us just as randomly. Everything we cherish will, eventually, be lost in a cosmos that drifts toward decay.
