But the history of this land, spanning four timezones and over five centuries of development, is one marked by tumultuous governance and political conflict, with different crowns worn by monarchs, military dictators, and democratic politicians alike, ruling over a teeming population of millions of former slaves, colonists and wannabe conquistadors.
