It’s relatively easy to get a herd of sheep moving. Fear is a very effective motivator. When animals are frightened, they run. Only a small number need move in the first instance. Others in the herd then react instinctively to this by running themselves. Soon enough, the whole herd is moving.
This is one part of the flight, or fight response. It’s an innate response – it’s hard-wired in them. It’s a feature designed to keep them safe from hunting predators.
The shepherd uses this natural characteristic to his advantage. He manipulates this feature for his own ends. How else would one shepherd and his dog succeed in corralling a great number of sheep, moving them from one place to another?
Whether we care to admit it or not, we too are creatures. We too have a herd mentality. Fear is a great motivator in us also. The media did a good job of frightening the populace with the Virus and the Pandemic. People have been herded from the open field, driven down the lane, to an enclosure and then from there on to the slaughterhouse.
Wise up and rise up.
