On September 28, 1542 the first White men stepped ashore in San Diego….and were quickly aghast at how many fucking rattlesnakes there were…it was a big problem for many explorers who hired local indians, the Kumeyaay , to walk ahead of the horses and dispatch the snakes. At least one was encountered every 100 yards. A rattlesnake bite back then was a painful death sentence, and if not usually involved amputated limbs.
