The Jewish State by Theodor Herzl (1896)

The Jewish State is a pamphlet published by Theodor Herzl in 1896 considered one of the most important texts of early Zionism. It is subtitled with "Proposal of a modern solution for the Jewish Question" and was originally called "Address to the Rothschilds", referring to the Rothschild family banking dynasty. Herzl designed this work to elevate the discussion of "the Jewish Question" so it would "no longer take the form of violent abuse or sentimental vindication, but of a debate, practical, large, earnest, and political". As expressed in this book, he argued that antisemitism is unavoidable due to the Jews' natural tendency to excel and take over whatever field they come into, something which sooner or later is bound to breed resentment from their host societies. The best way to avoid antisemitism in Europe, he argued, was to create the independent Jewish state in Zion in the 20th century. The nationalist movement culminated in the birth of the State of Israel in 1948, and is since synonymous with Jewish Nationalism.
