Marmon Herrington CTVL Tankette for Mexico 1938 / Japanese Tank Type 89

The Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL) ordered a total of 628 tanks, of various types, from Marmon-Herrington. Production was later taken over buy the US. Mexico acquired four tanks in 1942 via the Lend-Lease program. They joined the nine Marmon-Herrington CTVL tanks already in service in 1938 in the Compañía Reducida de Tanques Ligeros (Reduced Light Tanks Company), based in Mexico City. Later, they were added to the tank group of the Brigada Motomecanizada (Mechanized Brigade). In 1955, they were taken out of service and put in storage after which all four were scrapped.

The Type 89 was originally based on the Vickers Medium Mark C tank. The prototype of the Type 89 light tank was completed in 1929 and designated as the Type 89. Later, the Type 89 was re-classified as a "medium tank" because the weight increased to over 10 tons due to several improvements. As the army's Sagami Arsenal lacked the capacity for mass production, a contract was awarded to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which built a new tank factory to specifically produce this model. Production of the Type 89 began in 1931 and it soon became the main battle tank of the Japanese Army.
