In this video, I discuss how China has moved from recycling trade surplus US dollars into Treasuries to using them to acquire hard assets and infrastructure all around the world.

After China entered the WTO in 2001 until about 2013, China was the main marginal buyer of US Treasuries, helping to keep interest rates low in the US and enabling US consumers to finance the consumption of even more Chinese goods.

That all changed around 2013, when China began to acquire overseas natural resources and commodity firms like Smithfield Foods (US pork producer). This has continued worldwide since then, with a special emphasis on acquiring key assets in Latin America and Africa.

China will often issue a USD-denominated loan against local assets (often excluding any international immunity clauses) and use it as a method of acquiring those assets once the lender defaults.

It might just be time to brush up on your Mandarin.

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve has replaced China as the buyer of last resort of US Treasuries. The money printing will go on. . .
