Piano Sonata No. 1 in C major, Op. 1 by Johannes Brahms

Brahms completed this sonata in 1853, and would be first published in December the same year. While this work is designated as the Op. 1, it would be the second piano sonata that Brahms composed. The reason Brahms chose this to be his first published work is that he felt it to be of higher quality than his first piano sonata, an opinion that was seemingly shared by fellow composer Robert Schumann.

Brahms dedicated this sonata to the Hungarian violinist and composer Joseph Joachim.

This sonata is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro
II. Andante (nach einem altdeutschen Minneleide)
III. Allegro molto e con fuoco – Piu mosso
IV. Allegro con fuoco – Presto non troppo ed agitato
