The Mercury Theatre On the Air, was thought by many to be the finest quality radio drama of the 1930’s. Featuring the acclaimed New York drama company founded by Orson Welles and John Houseman, which had just produced an unprecedented season of critical and box office hits on Broadway.. These ambitious live performance radio plays featured an impressive array of talents many of whom went on to fame and fortune in the years to come.

The show first broadcast on CBS and CBC in July 1938. It ran without a sponsor until December of that year, when it was picked up by Campbell’s Soup and renamed The Campbell Playhouse.
