Proverbs 31 Woman Bible Study + Illustrating My Mother : Church Online
Happy Mother’s Day, everyone, and a special thank you to all of you mamas out there who have always been essential workers to your kiddos. Today, to help us celebrate moms, we will be doing a mini mother-themed Bible study while I draw a picture of my mom holding my son. As a special bonus, I have also created a coloring page version of this drawing for you and your kids, friends, or family members to enjoy coloring and decorating together. The link to the downloadable version is in the description and comments, and if you want to see how I made it, make sure to stick around to the end!

Before we dive into our discussion, we must first define Mother’s Day. According to Wikipedia, “Mother's Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.”
I love this opportunity because unfortunately, it’s far too easy to go about our lives taking our moms for granted, and to grow up underestimating the amount of suffering they endure to shower us in their love and protect us under their wings. Now that I have become a mother myself, I have started to truly understand the effort it takes. I now have a much greater respect for what I must have put my own mom through, too. Bearing this in mind, I encourage each of you to take a few minutes with me to recognise the many amazing things our mothers have done for us.
Proverbs 31:10-31 exclaims,
“An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet. She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple. Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers sashes to the merchant. Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.’ Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.”
I want to challenge each of you today to let those verses sink in, and to evaluate our own lives in light of them. Many of you are still blessed to have your mom in your life, but when was the last time you thanked her for all she has done for you? When was the last time you called your mother blessed and tried to intentionally bless her more? For the fathers out there, when was the last time you praised the mother of your children, saying “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” I’m not saying give praise where it is undue, but I do think it is important for us to revere and respect the women in our lives who have indeed done so much for us while receiving little in return. Where possible, let’s try to correct that moving forward. We know it will not be in vain.
Deuteronomy 5:16 agrees, saying, “Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”
Let’s pray.
