UNIT Johnny Todd
We recorded this in 1998 with Group No.1 (Martin, Coles, Burton, Fanning, Williams – the white band) in an arrangement deluged with jangly guitars...ugh. We had another go at it in 2006 with Group No.2 (Martin, Cheung, Thanh, Tran, Ngo) which marked a dramatic improvement and yet...and yet somehow it failed to satisfy me, mainly because the intricate bass guitar part could not be heard distinctly.
Group No.3 (Martin, Fritze, Murrell) avoided the number but now Group No.4 (Martin, Knight, Fritze, Murrell) has finally managed to record a decent rendition of this lovely number originally written in 1962 by Bridget Fry and her husband, musicologist Fritz Spiegel who arranged it for Piccolos, Harmonium, Snare Drum and Bass Drum whence it was utilised as the theme tune for Z Cars, a typically daft police series of the kind favoured by the BBC at the time.
Andy Martin – Alto Saxophone, Hammond Organ, ARP 2600.
Fabian Fritze – Tenor Saxophone.
Keilan Knight – Bass Guitar.
Colin Murrell – Drums.
Music – Bridget Fry & Fritz Spiegel.
Arrangement – Andy Martin.
