Nymphes des Bois by Josqiun des Prez

Franco-Flemish composer Josquin des Prez composed this chanson (a lyric driven polyphonic song of Frankish origin) in Febuary of 1497. While most works from des Prez in this period have an unclear date of composition, the date for this work is well established as the song is a lament for the death of fellow composer Johannes Ockeghem.

The text for the work is taken from a poem by the French poet Jean Molient (1435-1507) and includes text from the Requiem Aeternam (Funeral Mass). The work is composed to imitate the contrapuntal style of Ockeghem, particularly in the first two sections.
