Serenade No. 1 in D major, Op. 69a by Jean Sibelius

Sibelius would complete two serenades for orchestra between 1912 and 1913, with both first being published in 1913. Five years earlier, Sibelius had undergone emergency throat surgery to remove a tumour. The operation was a complete success and by 1909 Sibelius was able to travel abroad, in particular to Britain, to conduct his works personally. While his new works were a success, the period he spent in recovery from the operation had drained his funds. As such Sibelius would compose a number of shorter works to help support himself and his family, including these two Serenades.

Each serenade is comprised of a single movement.
