Al Green - For The Good Times (1972)

Al Green was one of the few artists performing their recordings live on the Soul Train show. Most lip synced as the purpose of the show was mainly to promote their new recordings and the producer of the show, Don Cornelius, no doubt wanted them to sound at their very best to promote record sales. Reverend Al was one of the exceptions though (along with James Brown, The Jackson 5, and one or two others) as Don realised that Al could have sang from the phone book (or hymn book in his case :) and would still have sounded great. At the time that this show went out Al was the hottest name in R&B Soul music and could do no wrong as far as the Soul music record buying public were concerned.

Al's version of this Kris Kristofferson classic was featured on his 1972 "I'm Still In Love With You" album but was not released as a single in the USA or UK, but only in Jamaica, Holland and Venezuela, and in France in 1979. The song did become a modest Billboard R&B chart hit for an obscure group called 7th Wonder in 1973 though who did an Al Green style rendering of it .
