Novorossiya or New Russia, also referred to as the Union of People’s Republics, was a short-lived confederation of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and the Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) in Eastern Ukraine, both of which were under the control of pro-Russian separatists at the time (they are currently under the internationally-unrecognized administration of the Russian Federation as autonomous republics of the country).
The creation of Novorossiya was declared on May 22, 2014, and one month later spokesmen of both republics declared their merger into a confederal “Union of People’s Republics”. Within a year, the project was suspended: on January 1, 2015, founding leadership announced the project has been put on hold, and on May 20, the constituent members announced the “freezing” of the political project.
Her anthem is the song “Živi, Novorossija!” (Живи, Новороссия!, “Live, Novorossiya!”). The lyrics, written by Oleg Ivashev in 2014, are in the Russian and Ukrainian languages. The melody used is that of the anthem of the Ukrainian SSR.
It was a highly controversial song in Ukraine due to the nature of the confederation.
