Amelia is besides her with joy! A miracle vaccine has been found! Soon everybody will be a ble to leave their homes. All those people chained to their living rooms will be able to come out! Erm... a vaccine for flu, because COVID-19 is a flu, with an efficiency of NINETYPERCENT!?
And then, Amelia became suspicious.... How very convenient! You have messed up by making an economic catastrophe out of a nothing burger and now you need to get back of the hook without telling the people this was a shite flu and it was the mishandling of the health services what caused the increased mortality.
So, Amelia does what she does, look at hard data. Which show that, indeedy, indeedy, flu vaccines have a life saving efficacy of about 50%. Almost like hydroxychloroquine, by the way.
Not happy with that, she recruits Cassie-Fooky to plot some data. Interestingly, in a study in the USA over the period 1990 to 2000, flu vaccine effecgtiveness peaked and then began to drop. Possibly anti-vaxxers have something to do. Or simply the strains of flu had changed and the vaccines lost power to fight them. But the point is clear: vaccines do not go beyond 60% effecrtiveness.
Also, tests subjects are chosen by genetic screening so that they are more susceptible to the vaccine to be tested. So it is not a real life result.
So, you find a miracle vaccine and THAT is what allows people to go back to their normal lives, not the fact that normality should have never stopped. Thgat is what it looks like, if you think about it. A way out for politicians.
Clever, huh?
