What’s the rest of the day look like? So often we have owners come to us and say “my dog is out of control on the walk, it’s reactive in the yard, it’s barking and lunging at people, we are doing everything to stop it, but nothing is working.” That’s when we ask this question- “what’s the rest of the day look like?” You can’t expect to have a calm and collected dog outside if you can’t get ahold of your dogs behavior inside. Does your dog bark out the window? Does it break command repeatedly? Does it follow you around, beg for attention, free roam, and do whatever it wants? Chances are, if you answered yes to any of these questions, then that could be part of the issue. Start with the entire day’s framework, not just the one issue you are working on. Implement tons of structure, training, and rules inside the house before ever trying to do the same in the real world. Foundation work is what everything else builds upon. Until your dog is 100% rock solid within your home and yard, don’t attempt to hit the streets and solve reactivity issues. There are so many pieces to this puzzle of dog training, one of the major ones being the day to day interactions you have with your dog. Training is 24/7, make the entire day a structured training protocol.
