It is 2041, a new President has just been inaugurated, but this President is different from the rest. He comes from a new Democratic Party developed in the 2030’s that has become so progressive that they believe in equality for all sentient beings, not just humans. They call for animals to have the legal right to not be killed, abused, or exploited in any way, necessitating a ban on animal agriculture. This new President, facing a Congress that doesn’t have the stomach to pass legislation freeing animals from their chains, takes inspiration from Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order that freed the enslaved people in rebellious states during the Civil War, and signs an executive order stating that any predatory actions inflicted on animals is now banned, effective immediately.
But would this be legal?
In 1863 President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation which freed enslaved people in rebellious states in an effort to weaken the Confederacy’s economy and military which utilized slaves as laborers. Once enslaved people made their way to Union lines, they would by and large be free. This was also part of a strategy to reframe the Civil War away from solely an effort to preserve the Union, but also a moral war to end slavery, dissuading anti-slavery ..
