How many of the ten planks of the Communist Manifesto are currently in place in the United States?
In this entry, I cover Karl Marx's ten planks as set out in the Communist Manifesto. The Manifesto was put together in 1848 by Marx but primarily at the behest of his friend and supplier of funds Friedrich Engels. Some consider it a collaborative work, however, Engels always gave full credit to Marx.
I am analyzing this from a realistic libertarian perspective, which I think is different than the typical view offered. The ten planks are often discussed in a rather hysterical fashion by conservatives and libertarians who seem to want to claim that all ten planks are in place in the U.S. or that 8 or 9 have been fulfilled already.
I offer a more optimistic outlook and find that only 4 of the 10 are currently in place. Moreover, 2 of the 4 really one has to stretch it a bit to get it over the line of saying 'Yes'. That being said, however, I would not really press the point too much if someone were to claim that maybe 5 or 6 are in place to a degree. More importantly, I think all of us who are opposed to both socialism and Marxian communism must realize the need to remain vigilant and watchful. Indeed, it would be best if we could manage to roll back all socialist endeavors and all aspects of Marx's planks which are already in place across the entire Western world.
Something of further import is to consider the planks from a communist perspective. Communists will tell you that the ten planks, even if all are fully instituted, were only Marx's suggestions as to how to transition a nation to a state of socialism. In other words, all ten would not deliver his vision of a communist land. Recall that Marx's view was that once achieved, communism would no longer require a nation-state system as was the current model in the mid-1800s. The State, in other words, would wither away. More than this, communists say that Marx's ten planks are merely a series of "good ideas" or "goo..
