Our Lady: the Perfect Carmelite

St. Teresa of Jesus Los Andes: “The Most Holy Virgin, my Mother, was a perfect Carmelite.” The name “Carmel” means “Garden of God.” St. Louis de Montfort wrote of her with this title in mind: “Mary is the true paradise of the new Adam… filled with untold riches, with beauty, with delights, with all sorts of good things the new Adam left there” (Wisdom’s Fool, p65). In another place he is more elaborate in his description: “In this Eden, this weedless garden… one may find trees which were planted by God and maintained by His grace. There is the tree of life which bore Jesus as its fruit. And there is the tree of knowledge of good and evil, which fruit was Incarnate Wisdom, the light of the world. There are, in this most beautiful place, flowers of virtue whose fragrance thrills the angels. There are fields of flowers, meadows of hope, towers of strength, and mansions of simplicity and trust… The air is pure. Day reigns here. Day without night. A beautiful day, the day of the Sacred Humanity. The sun does not cast a shadow. It is the sun of the Divinity.… The Holy Spirit speaks of Mary as the sanctuary of the Divinity, the resting place of the Trinity, the throne of God, the city of God, the altar of God, the temple of God, and the world of God” (Wisdom’s Fool, p 65).
