the rolling stones - carol - wide mono I
Edit 1 for headphones. The Rolling Stones lip sync "Carol" on French tv - October 19, 1964. Oh boy, camera men in those days really knew how to mess up a performance... missing almost every solo Keith was playing, missing Mick singing the lines; taking the wrong shot about every ten seconds. In Holland there's a saying: doing it the French way, which means: doing things messy... Anyway, this video should be played LOUD. Oh, by the way, watch Bill Wyman's guitar closely: it has four strings, but it is a six string guitar (six knobs). (Their own equipment hadn't arrived in time, so they had to use these borrowed guitars made by Klira. A German make.
Recorded January 3, 1964, released in the UK on the album "The Rolling Stones" and in the US on "England's Newest Hit Makers" in 1964.
Rhythm electric guitar: Brian Jones. Vocals: Mick Jagger. Electric lead guitar: Keith Richards. Bass: Bill Wyman. Drums: Charlie Watts.
The Rolling Stones covered this Chuck Berry classic on their first album in 1964. They were the first to bring this and many other rhythm & blues songs to a white audience. Chuck Berry got the name Carol from the daughter of Clyde McPhatter's girlfriend's daughter. McPhatter was a popular R&B singer who fronted "The Drifters" for a time. The Beatles performed this song too... compared to the Stones' version a sad display of typical English not-knowing-what-rhythm & blues-is-about... For rhythm & blues is about speed, action, and definitely not about slowness & lifelessness...
CAROL
(Chuck Berry)
oh, Carol, don't let him steal your heart away
I'm gonna learn to dance if it takes me all night and day
climb into my machine so we can groove on out
I know some swinging little joint where we can jump and shout
it's not too far back on the highway not so long a ride
you park the car in the open you can walk inside
a little cutie takes your hat and you can thank her ma'am
'cause every time you make the scene you find the joint is jammed
oh, Carol, don't let him steal your heart away
I'm gonna learn to dance if it takes me all night and day
now if you want to hear some music like the boys are playing
hold tight, bang your foot don't let it carry you away
don't let the heat overcome you when they play so loud
while the music intrigues you when they get a crowd
well you can't dance I know you would you could
I got my eyes on you, baby, cause you dance so good
oh, Carol, don't let him steal your heart away
I'm gonna learn to dance if it takes me all night and day
oh, Carol, don't let him steal your heart away
I've got to learn to dance if it takes me all night and day
oh Carol...
