It’s all very well to say that the individual is free, autonomous and sovereign.… However, while it might be a nice idea to make these claims, to champion the individual and their inalienable rights, in reality, the situation is not so straightforward.
Why? Well, for the simple reason that we don’t live in isolation.
The vast majority of humanity, some 85%, nowadays lives in urban areas - towns and cities. The remaining 15% of humanity lives in rural areas. But, that said, no matter how big or small the community might be, we are each and every one of us all part of some community or other. So, whether we live in some vast megalopolis, or some small hamlet, or village, we all live in some kind of community situation.
Even if the individual lives alone within their community – with no friends, or relations, or little by way of interaction with others in the community – they do nevertheless still live in a community. They are still part of that community irrespective of how much they interact with it.
And, it should be noted that all of us (bar none) live in nation states. Even the hermit lives in a nation.
