Fauré completed this work in 1876, with the first public premiere taking place in January of 1877 at the Salle Pleyel concert hall in Paris. The work was an immediate success, and is credited with being one of the defining which attracted the attention of other famous artists of the day such as Saint-Saëns, Thibaud and Proust.

The sonata is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro molto
II. Andante
III. Scherzo: Allegro vivo
IV. Finale: Allegro quasi presto
