Manzano bananas are short and chubby with thick green then yellow skins. They're sometimes called the apple banana because of their apple-like flavor when mature. When fully ripe, they have a slight tropical, pineapple flavor.
Manzano is a variation of the Spanish word manzana, for apple.
They taste better than the regular bananas found at grocery stores.
Unfortunately the skin tends to split open. They must be picked from the plant before they ripen, turn yellow. That helps keep them from slitting although some will still split open. When they split open insects and birds like to eat them. The insects lay eggs in them.
It is a good idea to cut away the exposed parts of the banana before eating. But I do not think any harm will come if you manage to eat an insect egg. It is just not appetizing.
