ANU astrophysicist and cosmologist Dr Brad Tucker says the DART spacecraft sent by NASA to test asteroid redirection “will be destroyed” when it collides with the rock.

“You very rarely build a satellite to purposely crash it, but that’s okay, that’s what this is,” he told Sky News Australia.

“We actually don’t know how much damage is going to happen to the asteroid because we don’t really understand and have a great picture of how dense these objects are.”

Dr Tucker said asteroids can range from “really light material” to “pure iron,” and the DART mission, among other things, is hoping to discover the density of asteroids and how much damage can be inflicted upon them.

He said the “only way” to figure this out was by sending a spacecraft on a one-way journey and to build it to “do as much impact” as it can to figure out if it can be moved and when another DART mission would need to be deployed.

“It’s the beginning of a process, but it’s an exciting process, one that hopefully we never need, but if we do need in the distant future, it’s good to know we have it,” he said.
