Brahms completed this work for two violins, two violas and two cellos in 1860 with the premiere performance being given in October the same year in Hanover. The sextet format of double violin, viola and cello was only moderately popular before this work from Brahms, in particular with composers such as Boccherini and Pleyel. The ensemble would see a minor resurgence after the sextet from Brahms.

This sextet is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro ma non troppo 00:00
II. Andante, ma moderato 10:49
III. Scherzo: Allegro molto 21:03
IV. Rondo: Poco allegretto e grazioso 24:31
