Tchaikovsky completed this suite in 1883, with the premiere performance being given in February 1884 in Moscow. The work is dedicated to Praskovya Vladimirovna Tchaikovskaya, the wife of Anatoly Tchaikovsky the brother of Pyotr.

The suite is comprised of five movements:
I. Jeu de sons: Andantino un poco rubato
II. Valse: Moderato tempo di valse
III. Scherzo burlesque: Vivace, con spirito
IV. Rêves d'enfant: Andante molto sostenuto
V. Danse baroque: Vivacissimo
