orlared:Media Blitz For Immigrant Council's Hate Crime Laws Campaign Despite Lacking Public Interest (Ireland)
The Immigrant Council's campaign for Hate Crime Legislation was treated to a media blitz across the print, radio and television media on August 10th, 2018. 2FM even broadcast their show inside Hueston Station in aid of the campaign and gave away free Leap Cards to listeners. Advertisements comprising hundreds of commuters' selfies to make up the images of migrants' faces were put on buses and posters.
The Immigrant Council's Teresa Buczkowska tweeted that she was proud to be part of the campaign saying that we all play a role in standing up to racism but that first we needed "hate crime" laws. This tweet was retweeted three times and liked six times.
Brian Killoran who heads the Immigrant Council listed three things they would be promoting the need for:
1. Better official recording of racist incidents.
2. Hate Crime legislation.
3. A new national action plan on racism which he said last expired in 2008.
His tweet was retweeted twice and liked eight times.
The campaign never seemed to take off among the public.
In total, the hashtag #TransportAgainstRacism was tweeted fourteen times throughout the day and mostly by the media and people involved with the campaign..

Asked why the current provisions of the Prohibition on the Incitement to Hatred act didn't cover the hate crime legislation he wants implemented, Brian Killoran said that it doesn't take into account online racism.
Today, the Culture Minister Josepha Madigan said social media sites are a 'very real threat to western democracy'. She added that she will be asking other Government officials to prioritise the introduction of social media regulation before the end of the year.
