France: Yellow Vests protesters dress as XVIII century royalty to protest inequality

A group of Yellow Vests protesters dressed as members of a 1700s royal cortege descended on the city of Lille in northern France, Saturday, to demand reforms to what they see as modern-day privileges among the political class, on the 22nd consecutive week of demonstrations.

Dressed up in costumes harking back to the French Revolution, protesters marched through Lille, reading a Victor Hugo speech from 1849 about the abolition of poverty and displaying a makeshift guillotine, to protest social inequality.

"It's a satirical action to demonstrate that nowadays we still live under a monarchy, a presidential monarchy. We fight this because the monarchy calls its [own] privileges and has not been really abolished," said one protester.

The Yellow Vests protests emerged last November over fuel tax hikes, later escalating into urban protesting across the country.
