Schubert completed this symphony in 1815 at the age of 18. At this time Schubert was both learning music, from composer Antonio Salieri, and working as teacher himself. This is one of the shortest symphonies Schubert would compose, with a number of musical details reminiscent of Joseph Haydn.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Adagio maestoso – Allegro con brio
II. Allegretto
III. Menuetto. Vivace
IV. Presto vivace
