Released on August 10, 2018 — nearly 5 years after their premier title, Contrast — Compulsion Games released We Happy Few, a game of paranoia and survival, in a drugged-out, dystopian English city in 1964. Unlike the older child of their earlier teen-level game, We Happy Few presents players in the role of three different characters (one per Act in the game) trying to escape the dystopian town of Wellington Wales.
Standard W, A, S, and D controls are used, with Ctrl being a held crouch and C toggling between crouching and standing. Typically, E and V present the player with two different options in various situations.
Within an alternative timeline of history, the United States never came to the aid of the Allies in World War II, leaving the United Kingdom to fend off Germany alone. The Battle of Britain was lost to Germany, which subsequently continued bombardment for a time and eventually occupied it.
Some time during the occupation, the population of Wellington Wells did what they considered to be a "Very Bad Thing". While it forced the German occupiers to completely leave their island, the guilt over their actions left the citizens guilt-ridden. The "solution" came in the form of a new hallucinogenic drug called: "Joy". Benefits include the suppression of all unhappy memories, leading users to experience incredible joy and happiness. However, the drug also decreased users' recognition of moral and long-term consequences. What's worse, it leaves users easily manipulable.
Can we help the three characters all escape from the island to a new life, or will the characters remain forever in their drug-addled society? Let's play We Happy Few and find out.
