Treating Primary Lateral Sclerosis with Stem Cells
Hi, it’s Josh with dream body clinic. The patient you're going to see here came to us because he's showing signs and symptoms of what's called PLS: Primary lateral sclerosis. It's similar to Lou Gehrig's disease, but a little bit different. I'm familiar with ALS Lou Gehrig's cause my dad actually had that terrible thing. PLS tends to just work on the nerves, the neural system, and it's not fun. You start losing mobility. You can actually lose functions and such. So we've seen it, this is our second patient with it. However, it's not a solid diagnosis, it's pretty tough to nail it down for sure. The patient is starting to show some signs and symptoms of those different nerve issues, things not quite working the way that they should. He came and did a bunch of different treatments, such as the IV and we fixed up his shoulder along some other body parts. At the end we decided to also do the intrathecal treatment, which you're going to see here.
With that we go into the spinal fluid. Dr. Torres our anesthesiologist does that. It's a 30 gauge needle, same size as an insulin needle. It can't hurt you. It gets stem cells right in the spinal fluid. Then that goes through the spinal fluid up to the cerebral fluid. So it works in the back, all of the nerves in the back of the spinal cord and the nerves up in the brain.
Stem cells send out what are called neurotrophic factors. These actually have been found to guide the regeneration of nerves. It has helped MS patients. With PLS it's the nerves that are not working properly. The first patient we did this with, you can go back through our past videos or look at the PLS page, he regained function in his right hand the same day of treatment. That's how fast stem cells acted on nerves. Sometimes it's that fast. Other times it takes weeks or months, but on nerve damage tends to be very fast. So, this is a really good way to get back function from nerve damage.
